CONF. 39 NON-IDENTIFICATION WITH THE THINGS OF DAILY LIFE AND WHY WE JUDGE OTHERS
When one identifies oneself, Consciousness falls asleep Wakefulness is lost, let us understand this.
Life is like a movie made up of many pictures and scenes. It is not in any way convenient to identify ourselves with any scene, with any picture, with any appearance, because everything passes: people pass, ideas pass, things happen, everyone is illusory. Any scene in life, no matter how strong it may be, passes and is left behind in time.
What should interest us is what is called BEING, Consciousness. That is the fundamental thing, because Being does not pass: Being is Being...
When we identify ourselves with the various comedies, dramas, and tragedies of life, it is obvious that we fall into the fascination and unconsciousness of psychological sleep. That is why we should not identify ourselves with any comedy, drama or tragedy of life, because no matter how serious it is, it happens. There is a common refrain that goes: "There is no evil that lasts a hundred years and no body that resists it." So, everything is illusory and temporary.
One in life sometimes encounters some difficult problems. It happens that sometimes one does not find the way out or the solution to the problem, and it becomes enormous, monstrous, gigantic before our minds. Then one succumbs to worries, and says "how shall I do? what shall I do?" One finds no escape from it, and the problem becomes more monstrous, enormous and gigantic to the extent that one continues to think about it. But the day comes when if we face the problem as it is, that is, if we take the bull by the horns, we see that the problem comes to nothing, it destroys itself, it is of an illusory nature.
But it is indispensable not to identify ourselves with any circumstance of life. When we do not identify with this or that problem, when we remain alert, we discover our own psychological defects in the problem.
Normally it is seen that problems are due to fear; The defect of fear keeps problems alive. They fear life, they fear death, what they will say, what they will think, gossip, slander, misery, hunger, nakedness, prison. Everything is feared, and because of this the problems become more and more insoluble, stronger.
In an economic problem, what do we fear? Ruin, or that we have to pay a certain debt, because if we don't pay we are put in jail, etc.
In a family problem, what do we fear? He says that it is said, the viperine tongue, the scandal, the vested interests, etc. But if the defect of fear is eliminated, everything vanishes, it becomes nothing.
If one never identifies with any event, problem or situation, one manages to be always alert and vigilant. And it is in this state of alertness that one discovers one's psychological defects. Discovered defect must be understood and then eliminated.
The worst circumstances of life turn out to be the ones that contribute the most to our inner growth. In the most pleasant moments of life, our inner work tends to yield less.
When one identifies oneself, one does not identify the defect that is manifesting. Normally these defects are projected onto other people, they look within us for identification so that we do not identify them, and thus we cannot discover or eliminate them.
For esoteric work it is essential to initiate a stage of incessant struggle not to identify with any element, whatever it may be. If a person identifies, for example, with alcohol, he ends up drinking; if he identifies himself with gluttony, he ends up eating, and so on with everything that is given.
An identification with an anger puts our Consciousness to sleep so much that we could spend several days identified without resuming psychological work. It is necessary that we fight at every moment not to allow ourselves to be identified.
- WHY DO WE JUDGE OTHERS?
Now let us study this other aspect that prevents the awakening of the Consciousness. It is necessary to know that we do not really know ourselves and that all the people on the outside serve as a mirror to see ourselves reflected.
If every time someone with a defect appears, we observe ourselves, we see that something is moving and that it does not want us to observe it. That is why it reacts and tries to make us criticize what this or that person is doing, so that we fall asleep in Consciousness and that we do not manage to discover it.
At a given moment what bothers us about someone is something that we carry hidden within our psychology and we do not like to see it on the outside, so we criticize it.
In other reactions we may discover that we have the opposite defect to what we see externally. For example: if I see someone who is wasting his money and I have the greedy defect inside me, this defect reacts when he sees his opposite on the outside. Then, I feel displeasure.
The key to everything is to always direct observation to the inner world, to see what we feel, what we think, what we desire, the way we are reacting, the inner talk that is given, etc.
As you look inside, you make discoveries and you can eliminate what you understand. But if identification is given, the next step will be Criticism. As soon as we identify ourselves, we begin to judge the other person, we criticize the defect we have projected onto him. As a result of the above, Conscience falls asleep and loses its own Critical Judgment.
Critical Judgment is the ability of Conscience to understand its own defects, but that capacity disappears as soon as the other person is criticized.
Let us reflect on this: if we do not know ourselves, how can we believe that we know others?
That is why we judge any appearance or any action that we see in others. But we should never identify ourselves with appearances because appearances can be deceiving. We look at a woman doing a certain thing and we say: "Ah, that's a prostitute." "That's a I don't know what", "that other is a queer", "that one over there is such", "the other one who comes there is a thief", etc.
But who is judging? If we were to look at the pointing finger and the other three fingers looking inwards... It is our own defects that are speaking on the outside that we have on the inside.
We have to realize that what we are judging of others is a mere appearance. We do not know the psychological reasons that forced a person to act in a certain way, we simply see an external fact and judge the external appearance.
Therefore, the judgment we make is a wrong judgment, and what happens to that wrong judgment? That judgment is a scandal, which ends up causing a bad relationship between the person being judged and oneself. In esotericism what really matters is the way in which internally we are related to each other, if I judge someone I become their enemy.
But let's continue analyzing: when one criticized a person and slandered him, it happens that he identified himself. He lost the possibility of self-observation and self-judgment of his defect.
Self-criticism is fundamental. It allows us to see our own defect reflected there, in front, in the other person. If we become aware that we have this defect we can ask for death and there will be elimination of it.
It is important to start a struggle to stop judging others; that fight is going to lead us to what is called the awakening of the Consciousness, and it is going to take place on two fronts:
- Not identifying oneself
- Not judging others
If we begin to combat these two errors, our Conscience will not fall asleep. And we will recover the Critical Judgment. When one truly recovers the critical judgment, everyone will serve as a mirror to be able to work on one's own defects. Death instant by instant is going to yield in an impressive way.
A person wastes too much time judging others. In esoteric work, when a Master is judged, for example, the person is stuck. If we do not have the capacity to understand the actions of people who are supposed to be at our same or a lower level of consciousness, much less can we judge those of Beings who have a higher level of consciousness.
- LET US REFLECTION ON THIS:
- We do not know ourselves.
- We project our defects onto other people.
- We judge outward appearances.
- Such actions do not really coincide with the judgment we make.
- Therefore, we misjudge the actions of others, we slander.
- The judgment we make is, in fact, our own psychological defect that we have projected onto others.
